Making a wordpress theme. part 1

I have recently starten my project for a new wordpress theme. Don`t know why, dont know when i will finish. Liking the project. I am using the basic usages from the wordpress templates of yonder year like twenty-ten, -eleven, -twelve and -thirteen… and whatever i find useful.

I don`t want to make this to dificult so i will be using a css framework for the hard css parts. I found a framework caled kube on the internets, and found it useful. Now for the basics. I want to make a wide template like twentythirteen for the layout, so keep this in mind.

Starting up. The basics, the files. I made a basic list of files:

  • style.css
  • functions.php
  • index.php
  • header.php
  • content.php
  • footer.php
  • css/kube.min.css

Styles so we can define the template in wordpress. You have to create a Theme Stylesheet, explained on the Theme Development page. It says who you are and what name you gave your template. Like this:

/*
Theme Name: Dimme kube
Theme URI: http://dimme.nl/
Author: me
Author URI: http://dimme.nl/
Description: Base theme form tutorial purposes
Version: 0.1
License: GNU General Public License v2 or later
License URI: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-2.0.html
Text Domain: dimme-kube
*/

Basically saying “Theme name” for in the theme section in the wordpress admin. “Theme URI” for my website. More you can imagine from the titles. “Version” for viewing in the admin, or if you have the version hosted on the wordpress theme site. “Text Domain” for loading language files, later more on this.

I can go on about the rest of the files, but i think that would be a lot for one post. Will make another after this one when it`s done about the header.php, footer and base styles. For now, my current state can be found here: dimme-kube-0.1.
